What are Plausible and Umami?
Plausible's site says: "Plausible Community Edition is open source under the GNU Affero General Public License Version 3 (AGPLv3) or any later version." [S2] The code is on GitHub at plausible/analytics, with 29,791 stars on 8 Nov 2026 [S8].
Umami is under the MIT license [S6]. The code is on GitHub at umami-software/umami, with 39,975 stars on 8 Nov 2026 [S9].
In our reading, the license is the main legal difference. The AGPLv3 text calls itself "a free, copyleft license" [S10]. The MIT text allows anyone to deal in the software "without restriction", as long as the copyright and permission notice are kept [S11]. Read the license text before you modify and host either tool.

Self-hosting Plausible vs Umami
Plausible Community Edition. The setup repo says: "CPU must support SSE 4.2 or NEON instruction set or higher (required by ClickHouse)." [S4] It also says "At least 2 GB of RAM is recommended" [S4].
Umami. The install guide asks for "A server with Node.js version 18.18 or newer." [S7] It also says "Umami supports PostgreSQL (minimum v12.14)" [S7].
In our reading, Plausible's self-hosted setup depends on ClickHouse, so check your CPU first. Umami runs on Node.js with a PostgreSQL database.
